Former Dayton forward finds new home in Mountain West Conference

Mustapha Amzil was UD’s third-leading scorer last season.

Mustapha Amzil will play his next season of college basketball at New Mexico, he announced Friday.

Amzil, a 6-foot-10 forward from Finland with two seasons of eligibility remaining, announced his decision to enter the transfer portal after three seasons with the Dayton Flyers on March 21.

Amzil now will be coached by Richard Pitino, who’s entering his third season at New Mexico. The Lobos finished 22-12 last season and lost in the first round of the NIT to Utah Valley.

New Mexico last played in the NCAA tournament in 2014 and has one 20-win season in the last nine years.

Amzil heads to the Mountain West Conference, which was the sixth-ranked conference, according to KenPom.com, after three seasons in the Atlantic 10 Conference, which was the 13th-best conference last season.

Amzil also visited Memphis and the University of Miami during the recruiting process.

Amzil ranked third on the team in scoring (9.3) and rebounds (4.8) last season. He finished his Dayton career with 700 points. He ranks 92nd in school history in scoring.
