While one of the new Dayton Flyers, Florida transfer Chase Johnson, received good news from the NCAA, which granted him a waiver to allow him to play from the start of this season, a former Flyer had his appeal denied this week.

Frankie Policelli, who transferred from Dayton to Stony Brook University in the spring, will have to sit out the entire season. He had appealed to the NCAA in hopes of being granted immediate eligibility. He'll be able to practice but not play in the 2019-20 season. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

“To say that we are disappointed that Frankie’s waiver request was denied would be an understatement,” Stony Brook Athletic Director Shawn Heilbron said in a statement. “I’m frustrated because our contention was that the totality of circumstances regarding his transfer to Stony Brook should have allowed him to compete right away. Frankie is a tremendous young man who is an important part of our Stony Brook family. Although I strongly disagree with the decision, we will move forward and support him in every way possible.”

A 6-foot-7 forward from Long Island Lutheran High School, Policelli saw limited minutes in 20 games last season. He averaged 0.9 points in 4.8 minutes per game. He scored a season-high eight points in 19 minutes against Fordham on Jan. 26. He did not appear in either postseason game against Saint Louis in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament or Colorado in the NIT.
