Former Miami standouts help Golden Knights win Stanley Cup

Former Miami Hockey standouts Alec Martinez and Reilly Smith scored a goal apiece in Game 5 to help the Vegas Golden Knights capture the franchise’s first-ever Stanley Cup with a 9-3 win over the Florida Panthers Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Knights won the series 4-1.

Smith totaled 14 points in the postseason (4-10-14) after ranking fourth on the team with 56 points during the regular season (26-30-56). Martinez, who contributed 14 regular-season points (3-11-14), added a pair of playoff goals and five assists in the playoffs.

Martinez was a second-team West All-American for Miami and produced 67 points from 2005-2008 (21-46-67). He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, previously winning titles with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012 and 2014. Martinez moved into a tie for second with several players with the most Stanley Cup wins among U.S.-born players in NHL history. Only two former New York Islanders — Dave Langevin and Ken Morrow — have more, with four.

Smith is tied for ninth in Miami hockey history with 66 goals and finished his career (2009-12) with 122 points, which ranks in the top 30 all-time. He was a first-team West All-American and Hobey Baker Award finalist in 2012. This is his first career Stanley Cup.
