Four area players on D-I All-Ohio first team

Jesse Deglow (Fairmont High School), Isaiah Gibson (Springfield), Gabe Newburg (Northmont) and Moses Douglass (Springfield) all were named first team All-Ohio Division I by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

The D-I teams were announced on Wednesday by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Ohio’s Mr. Football also was announced, Mansfield Lexington senior RB/LB Cade Stover.

Deglow, a running back, and Gibson, a lineman, were named to the first team offense. Newburg, a defensive end, and Douglass, a defensive back, were first-team defense. All are seniors.

Deglow carried Fairmont (7-4) into the D-I, Region 3 playoffs. He had 1,549 yards rushing and scored 22 touchdowns. He had a season-high 278 yards rushing and five TDs in a 49-44 Week 8 loss at Wayne.

Gibson also was key to the offensive line for Springfield (9-3), which also advanced to the D-I, Region 3 playoffs. He’ll sign with the University of Kentucky next month.

Newburg never fully recovered from a Week 2 high ankle injury against Fairmont. Still, teams often ran away from his side. He is verbally committed to Michigan.

Douglass, the son of Springfield coach Maurice Douglass, had 98 total tackles in 12 games, including two forced fumbles and an interception. He also is verbally committed to UK.

Fairmont junior linebacker Trey Baker was the only area D-I player to make the second team. Springfield senior WR/DB Michael Brown-Stephens was a third-team choice at receiver. He is verbally committed to Minnesota.

Stover is the 32nd Ohio Mr. Football. He led D-III Lexington (7-4) with 175 tackles and four interceptions. Offensively, he had 1,497 yards rushing and had a combined 19 TDs. He’s verbally committed to Ohio State as a linebacker.
