CJ girls qualify to defend golf title

Both the girls from Chaminade Julienne and Sarah Kolodzik of The Miami Valley School have another week to work on their short games.

Kolodzik was the individual medalist and CJ the team champion at the Southwest District Division II girls golf tournament Wednesday at the Pipestone Golf Club.

CJ now has a chance to defend the state team championship it won last year on Ohio State’s Gray course in Columbus. The 2012 tournament is at the same venue next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 12-13) with the top three teams and top three individuals not on qualifying teams advancing from the district.

The Eagles shot a team total of 359 on the par-72, 5,145-yard course. Alter was second (372) and Versailles third (375). This is the fourth straight trip to state for both CJ and Alter and the first for Versailles.

Kolodzik, a junior, is looking for the individual state championship after finishing fourth last year and runner-up as a freshman. She shot a 72 Wednesday followed by a 75 from Kacie Bradfish from Cincinnati Country Day and 77 from Pari Keller of Cincinnati Indian Hill.

The common defect in the games of Kolodzik and the CJ girls was chipping. All drove the ball well, but their second and third shots into the greens came up well short.

“I probably had four holes where I didn’t chip well enough to give myself a chance for a birdie putt,” said Kolodzik. “I had a good round, but it could have been so much better.”

Kolodzik teed off at 8:40 a.m. and was done by 12:30. To fill the approximately 2 1/2 hours before the rest of the field finished, she sat in the corner of the clubhouse doing homework in American history, physics, calculus and English. She has tests in all the those subjects Friday.

CJ’s best finisher was senior Mikaela Hadaway with an 81. Junior Kaitlyn Catrone shot 86, sophomore Sarah Downing 95 and freshman Ellie Cronin 97.

This is fourth consecutive year Hadaway has gone to state. “Really a cool feeling,” she said. “It’s nice to be in a position to have a chance to win it again.

“If we want to win state again we’ll have to shoot in the 330s or 340s both days at state. The key to lowering our scores is better chipping and putting. “

The best score for Alter was an 80 posted by Mary Rose Metter, last year’s district medalist. MaKayla Patton followed Metter with a 90, Kierstem Brill shot 98 and Rachel Laravie 104.
