Miamisburg to celebrate Mound Course anniversary

From 1936 to 1938 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA) provided grants to municipalities to construct public facilities as part of his New Deal to put Americans back to work following the Great Depression.

The City of Miamisburg took advantage of the situation to have its nine-hole Mound Golf Course built in 1937 and 1938. The course was designed by Alec “Nipper” Campbell, a native of Scotland who was the architect for many courses in the Miami Valley.

Miamisburg will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Mound Course during the six days from June 18-23 with a series of unusual golf events.

On Tuesday they’ll have competition with one club plus a putter. On Wednesday there will be cross country golf. Thursday has been designated for a junior/adult scramble and on Friday there will be a skins game.

Perhaps the most interesting of the events will be a nine-hole, two-person best ball Hickory Sticks tournament and cookout on June 22. All of the players will use wooden-shafted golf clubs that have been rented for the occasion, and they’ll play with soft Gutta Percha balls. The $100 team fee includes a cart and a steak dinner.

On June 23 the celebration will end with golfers playing the Mound course backward. For more information, call 937-866-2211 or go to moundgolf.com on the Internet.
