MIDDLETOWN — Middletown High School football coach Troy Everhart is nearly three weeks into his new position and he couldn’t be happier.
Everhart said he hasn’t had a bad day yet, except for getting caught in traffic because of an accident on I-75 Wednesday morning.
“All the after-school stuff has been great,” Everhart said. “The kids are responding to every new thing we throw at them in the weight room, and the (school) staff has been very welcoming in my new position (as attendance coordinator).”
Everhart also praised several assistant coaches for keeping the weight room going for two months during the football coach searching process.
“None of this would have been possible without the dedication to the kids in the weight room by Matt Tyla, John Hembree, Frank Frazier and Lance Engleka,” Everhart said. “None of them had to do that. They weren’t getting paid for it, but there were 40 kids consistently in the weight room, and they did it because they love Middletown and the kids.
“We have a chance to win next season because of those four guys,” he added.
Three of the four — Tyla, Hembree and Frazier — will remain on Everhart’s staff next season, he said. Engleka has been offered a position, but has not yet committed because of some personal issues.
Everhart added that he has made three additional staff hires, but was waiting on approval from the school board before making their names public. He said there are still three remaining positions to be filled, one of which could be filled by Engleka.
Everhart also has switched up the Middies scrimmage schedule for this fall. He has replaced Lebanon and Trotwood-Madison with Elder and Lakota East. There also will be two intrasquad scrimmages as well, and all four scrimmages will be officiated.
“The more I can have officials at those games will help the kids with correcting their mistakes,” Everhart said. “I’ve always believed in scrimmaging good opponents, and those scrimmages are going to get us battle-tested. We’ve got to be ready to go when the season starts.”
The Middies open the season against Wayne — last season’s Division I state runner-up — in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown at a date and location still to be determined.
“As I’ve said before, the foundation has already been started here,” Everhart said. “The kids are excited to get going and pride in this town is amazing, but whether you go 10-0 or 0-10, there is always something that needs to be improved.”
