Doug Ute is the new executive director of the OHSAA

The new OHSAA executive director is Doug Ute.

The governing body for Ohio high school sports made the announcement Tuesday morning.

He replaces Jerry Snodgrass, who was dismissed in July after two years running the organization.

Bob Goldring served as director in the interim.

Ute joins the OHSAA after serving as superintendent Newark City Schools in central Ohio.

He is a native of Bellville.

“I have always thought like a former coach and athletic director, and the OHSAA is where I want to be,” Ute said in a release. “I am humbled to be selected by the Board of Directors for this position and join a great team at the OHSAA office. We are all aware of the uncertainties that are before us due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but I know that together we can and will be stronger together. My focus has always been on helping students become better people, and athletics are such an important part in that. That is true now more than ever. I can’t wait to get started and help lead our member schools.”

Ute takes over an organization that suffered a huge financial hit when it had to cancel most winter sports championships and all spring sports.

The OHSAA announced last week it plans to move forward with 26 sanctioned sports championships this school year despite state requirements for reduced attendance as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

With 80 percent of the private nonprofit organization’s revenue coming from tournament ticket sales, the organization is planning to make deep cuts to its budget.

Those include layoffs as well as reduced salaries and benefits for full-time staff.

The organization also announced it will not reimburse team tournament expenses this year and it has suspended production of its magazine, school directory, year in review, pocket calendar and radio network.
