Dayton Flyers quarterback Alex Jeske will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury Saturday in the first quarter of the season opener at Welcome Stadium, UD announced Monday.

Jeske’s college career ends with the injury. He’s a fifth-year senior from Glen Ellyn, Ill, who led the Flyers to the Pioneer Football League championship as a redshirt freshman in 2015 and won the team MVP award in 2016. Last season, Jeske missed the first five games with a broken foot.

"It's very unfortunate. Heartbreaking, really," said Dayton coach Rick Chamberlin in a press release. "He worked so hard after missing half of the season last year. He had a great spring and a great camp, and what the fans saw in the first quarter there is what we saw all during the preseason. He completed six of seven passes and had the offense really moving. All of us — his teammates and coaches — feel for him. But he is still a very important part of our football team. He will have a positive impact in helping all of our quarterbacks .We will feel his presence from here on out."

Dayton beat Robert Morris 49-28 on Saturday. Jeske threw for 82 yards and completed a touchdown pass before the injury. Redshirt freshman Jack Cook, of Cranberry Township, Pa., replaced Jeske at quarterback and completed 7 of 11 passes for 111 yards with two touchdowns.

Jeske completed his bachelor’s degree in Finance and is working on his his master’s in Finance.
