D-I boys All-Ohio teams on Scoreboard
Trey Landers of Wayne and Wilmington’s Jarron Cumberland were named first team Division I All-Ohio boys high school basketball by the Associated Press on Wednesday and Xavier Simpson of Lima Senior was chosen Mr. Basketball.
Landers, 6 feet 5, averaged 16.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists as a senior. The Warriors were 22-0 in the regular season and were the defending D-I state champion, but were upset by Lakota East in a district final.
Landers had season highs of 30 points and 13 rebounds in an 82-61 defeat of Trotwood-Madison. He has signed to play at the University of Dayton.
Landers’ brother, Wayne grad Robert Landers, is a redshirt freshman defensive lineman at Ohio State and his cousin, Dunbar senior Terrance Landers, was a third-team D-II All-Ohioan in basketball. Terrance, a receiver, has signed to play football at Purdue.
Cumberland, a 6-5 senior, reset most of Wilmington’s single season and career records. He averaged 29.5 points as a senior and has guided the Hurricane (27-1) into this week’s D-I state final four at Columbus. He has signed with Cincinnati.
Simpson, a 6-foot guard, began his career at Lima Central Catholic and transferred to Lima Senior when his father Quincey Simpson landed the Spartans’ head coach position. He averaged 30.2 points as a senior and also has led Lima Senior (28-0) in the D-I state semifinals against Cumberland and Wilmington on Friday.
Simpson has signed with Michigan. Ironically, Cumberland also was a finalist for Mr. Basketball, which was won by Franklin grad and Duke freshman Luke Kennard the last two years.
Quincey Simpson, a Lima Senior grad, was named the D-I co-coach of the year along with Jacob Daniel of Columbus St. Charles. Former two-time Mr. Basketball winner Greg Simpson (1991-92) is related to Xavier and Quincey Simpson. Other Mr. Basketball previous winners from Lima were Aaron Hutchins of Central Catholic in 1994 and Jamar Butler of Lima Shawnee in 2004.
Springfield 6-3 junior Danny Davis was a second-team pick. He averaged 19.5 points and 7.0 rebounds for the Wildcats (18-8).
The teams were chosen by the AP based upon recommendations by statewide media panels.
