Cavaliers quarterback Jake Hemmelgarn completed 17 of 24 passes for 252 yards the three touchdowns. Massie (1-1) had 144 yards rushing from Brendan Lamb.
It was the second game of a two-year contract between the midsized state powers. Massie was the D-IV state runner-up last season.

Coldwater had a streak of playing in eight straight D-V state championships – winning four - snapped last season by D-VI state champ Marion Local. The Cavs dropped a division because of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s competitive balance initiative.
Marion Local (2-0) extended its three-season win streak to 29 following a 42-7 rout of visiting Hamler Patrick Henry.
Fort Recovery (2-0) landed a 27-23 defeat of visiting Valley View. The Indians covered 72 yards with 1:40 left with QB Clay Schmitz running seven yards for the winning score. Owen Sheridan’s interception on the Spartans’ final possession clinched the win.

It was the first regular-season loss for Valley View since Week 5 of the 2016 season, a 41-8 setback at Franklin. Last season Valley View edged Fort Recovery 24-21.
• Defending D-III state champion Trotwood-Madison had its 16-game, two-season win streak snapped by visiting Chicago Simeon Career Academy, 33-6. It was the first time the programs had played and fulfilled a one-game contract.
Simeon (2-0) is nationally renowned as a boys basketball power and is anchored at Chicago’s South Side. Trotwood (1-1) hosts defending D-I state champ Pickerington Central (2-0) in Week 3. Trotwood handed Central its only loss last season, 28-19 also in Week 3.

• Carroll rallied from a two-TD deficit to stun visiting Beavercreek 25-24 in a failed extra-point oddity. The teams combined for seven unsuccessful two-point runs, four by the Beavers (0-2) and three by the Patriots (2-0).
Patriots senior running back Fred Butts scored the winning touchdown on a 3-yard run with 2:52 left. The difference was Kade Greer’s successful extra-point kick on Carroll’s first score.

• Centerville (0-2) dropped its second straight game and third overall over two seasons, falling 20-14 to visiting Lakota West (1-1) in a game that also was completed on Saturday.
Elks receiver J.R. Melzer had seven catches for 93 yards. Teammate Corey Burnette leads the Greater Western Ohio Conference with 14 catches for 337 yards (24.1).
Centerville (0-2) hosts Alter (1-1) on Friday. The teams last played in 2010, a 24-7 Centerville home win.

• Senior QB Tate Vongsy completed 11 of 19 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown in Miamisburg’s 24-14 defeat of visiting Lewis Center Olentangy. Is was the second straight impressive win for the Vikings, at Loveland in Week 3. Olentangy (0-2) was 8-4 last season and went two games into the D-I, Region 2 playoffs.

• Wayne (2-0) will play its first Ohio team in Week 3, a massive challenge against three-time defending state champ Akron Archbishop Hoban (2-0). Wayne blasted visiting and first-year program Columbus Christians of Faith Academy 42-6. The Warriors opened the season with a 56-20 defeat of Austin-East from Knoxville, Tennessee.

• Greenville (2-0) is at Chaminade Julienne (1-0) in the ABC 22/Fox 45 Thursday Night Lights Week 3 game. CJ resumed its game at Cincinnati Woodward late Saturday afternoon.
Greenville senior Landon Eldridge is among the area rushing leaders with 396 yards (10.4) and eight touchdowns.
