Marty’s magic bus still a lucky charm for Dayton Flyers

Marty Flickner almost drove the Dayton Flyers to the Final Four in 2014. The bus driver from Geneseo, N.Y., turned into a good-luck charm during the Elite Eight run when he drove the bus that carried the team around Buffalo and Memphis. He resumed his duties last season, driving the Flyers around Olean, N.Y., and watching them beat St. Bonaventure 78-61.

Flickner wasn’t about to miss Dayton’s return trip to Olean this week. He again drove the team from the airport in Buffalo to St. Bonaventure and back, and in between, he watched the Flyers win again, 85-79 at the Reilly Center on Tuesday.

“I love to follow this team,” Flickner said. “I watch them on TV all the time.”

Asked if he might give Flickner a full-time job back in Dayton, coach Archie Miller said, “We probably need to discuss that a little bit. From the first time we ever met him, there’s been a little bit of magic on that bus.”

Pierre's performance: Dayton senior forward Dyshawn Pierre scored 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting. He's averaged just over 20.3 points in the last three games after averaging 9.5 in his first four games.

“Coaches, players, they’ve really been on me to just play free,” Pierre said. “They welcomed me back, and I’m happy to be playing the way I’m playing right now.”

Pollard's numbers: After being held scoreless Friday in a 77-70 victory over George Washington for the first time since his freshman season, junior forward Kendall Pollard scored the first six points Tuesday. He finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

Next game: The Flyers flew back to Dayton after their game at St. Bonaventure but will return to the Empire State this weekend. They play at Fordham in Bronx, N.Y., at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Fordham (10-6, 1-4) hosts George Mason (7-11, 1-4) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Rams opened A-10 play with a 69-63 loss at George Washington. They beat La Salle 66-61 at home and have since lost three straight: 93-82 at home to Richmond; 88-54 at Virginia Commonwealth; and 80-55 at St. Joseph’s.

Dayton has won 11 straight games against Fordham, including four straight at Rose Hill Gym. Fordham is 10-1 at home this season.

Around the A-10: The best game Wednesday pits Duquesne (12-6, 2-3) vs. first-place VCU (13-5, 5-0) in Richmond, Va. VCU has won eight straight games and is 9-1 at home.
