Bengals place John Ross on season-ending IR

UPDATE 4:20 p.m.

Four hours after Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said rookie first-round pick John Ross had a chance to play Sunday against Chicago, the team placed the wide receiver on season-ending Injured Reserve with a shoulder injury.

It’s unclear how the shoulder issue occurred as Ross was not on the injury report last week and was inactive as a healthy scratch Monday night against the Steelers.

He finishes his rookie season with three games played, zero catches, two targets, one rush for 12 yards and a lost fumble.

The Bengals filled Ross’ spot on the 53-man roster by signing defensive tackle Josh Topou off the practice squad. They also signed linebacker Carl Bradford to fill Topou’s spot on the practice squad.

A third-year player out of Arizona State, Bradford originally was a fourth-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2014. He has spent regular-season time on 53-player rosters with both the Packers (2014-16) and San Francisco (2016), as well as some time on Chicago’s practice squad this season. He has two career games played, both with the 49ers in 2016.

Original report: 12:50 p.m.

Cincinnati Bengals fans who have been waiting all season to see first-round pick John Ross catch a pass may get their chance Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

“There’s a good opportunity, possibly, for John to be suited up this week,” Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said, referring to the fact that team has several players who may not be available due to significant injuries.

“It might be in as cornerback,” Lewis said with a laugh. “He’s played it. The first video I ever saw of John Ross was playing cornerback.”

Cornerbacks Dre Kirkpatrick (concussion), Adam Jones (groin) and Darqueze Dennard (knee) all suffered injuries Monnday against Pittsburgh, although only Jones did not finish the game.
