Dayton Flyers women’s basketball coach Tamika Williams-Jeter announced Thursday the addition of a third new player since her hiring in March: Maryland transfer Taisiya Kozlova, a 6-foot-1 guard who has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

“When I think of someone like Tai, I think of someone that has a very old soul,” Williams-Jeter said in a press release. “She has been here before. She has lots of layers, and I can’t wait to get her on campus to really expose those, both on and off the court. Tai is from Russia and has a lot of stories to tell surrounding what’s going on in that country right now. Along with being a phenomenal student at Maryland, she will be a great asset for us on the court with her ability to stretch the defense out and shoot the ball at a very high level. She’s 6-1 so she gives us a big, long guard. Dayton fares well when we have 6-1, 6-2 wings that can really stroke it from the 3-point arc. We are super excited to have Tai for a multitude of reasons. She’s a great person and has a rich story to tell.”

Kozlova entered the transfer portal April 5. She spent two seasons at Maryland. As a freshman, she averaged 2.3 points in 9.8 minutes in 20 games. As a sophomore, she averaged 1.3 points in 10.4 minutes per game in 21 games.

Kozlova is a native of Moscow, Russia. She shared her feelings about Russia’s war against Ukraine in March by writing “No war” and “Stand with Ukraine” on her shoes before her game. She flew back to Moscow in February to be with her family.

Kozlova has been in the United States for three seasons. She attended Elevation Prep Academy in Sarasota, Fla., as a senior and averaged 13.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game.

Kozlova joins freshman Nayo Lear, whose signing was announced Tuesday, and Ohio State transfer Anyssa Jones, whose signing was announced last week, among Dayton’s newcomers.

Dayton has one other incoming freshman: Saija Cleveland. There are five returning players listed on the roster: Capria Brown; Shannon Wheeler: Mariah Perez; Destiny Bohanon; and Maliya Perry.

NCAA women’s basketball teams can have as many as 15 scholarship players, so Dayton has six spots open.
