Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Paul Guenther said Rey Maualuga’s absence from practice Tuesday was not injury related, but ESPN’s Adam Caplan is reported the linebacker will miss Monday’s game against the New York Giants due to a leg issue.

A Bengals source confirmed the report and said Maualuga’s absence could be longer.

The team clarified the injury as “fibula” on the practice report.

Maualuga was not present during the open locker room period Thursday or during the portion of practice open to the media.

He has played in 108 games with 103 starts since the Bengals drafted him in the second in 2009.

He’s appeared in all eight games this season with five starts and ranks 12th on the team with 20 tackles. His playing time has decreased over the last month, partly due to the injury and partly because the Bengals have spent more time in nickel situations.

Veteran Vinny Rey likely will start in his spot Monday night in New York.
