Minster beats Russia in state baseball final on walkoff hit

Minster wins third state title in last seven seasons

Jon Niemeyer’s two-out single to left field scored Jared Huelsman to give Minster a 2-1 victory over Russia in the Division IV state baseball championship Saturday at Huntington Park.

The game featured two high schools located 13 miles apart. Russia beat Minster 17-6 in the second game of the season.

Minster (25-7) won its third state championship in the last seven seasons. It also won in 2011 and 2012. All the championships have come under coach Mike Wiss, who’s in his 23rd season.

Jack Heitbrink pitched a complete game for Minster, allowing one earned run on five hits in seven innings.

Russia scored its only run in the second inning on an RBI single by Evan Monnier. Minster tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single by Adam Knapke.

TRACK: Dunbar boys win state title

Russia (24-7) was seeking its first state title since 1971. This was its first final four appearance since 1975.
