Local racing: Tri-State Dragway divisions still too close to call

With three race weekends left in the 2010 season, two of the three remaining racing division crowns at Tri-State Dragway remain up for grabs.

I say “two” because West Chester’s John Cook Jr. has a very sizeable lead in the Super Pro category. Cook Jr. has piloted his 2002 Miller dragster to a 95-point lead in the division over Erlanger, Kentucky’s Joe Lee.

The other two remaining divisions are still pretty close. In fact, the Pro division has a new points leader.

That’s because then-leader Darrell Jones, of Hamilton, did not compete in last week’s double-points event at Tri-State. That enabled another Hamiltonian — Wayne Adams — to take over the points lead. The Bishop Brothers, drivers of the “Mighty Mouse” Camaro (one of my favorite cars at the track) are right behind Adams.

Kevin Bishop sits second and Jason is just five points behind in third. Jones is now fourth, so that division is definitely up for grabs.

The race for the Street division crown is also a tight battle. Fairfield’s Jeff Seither holds a narrow five-point lead over Hamilton’s Ken Barton. Norwood hotshoe Dave Jennings is just 30 points out of the lead spot.

As you may remember, Austin Still had claimed the Junior Dragster title a couple weeks ago.

Last week, the junior dragsters did not compete, but Fairborn’s Dean Karns Jr. won the Super Pro final over Cincinnati’s Ryan Butler; and a Darryl Jones from Kansas City, Mo. nipped Jason Bishop in the Pro final by 2/10,000ths of a second.

Cincinnatian Jake Prewitt piloted his 1972 Nova to a finals win over Hamilton veteran Brian Hendrickson in the Street Bracket finale.

Full program at Tri-State on Sunday

On Sunday, Tri-State will offer a full program of National Hot Rod Association-sanctioned bracket drag racing. Super Pro, Pro, Street and Junior Dragster divisions are scheduled to race at the Ross Township facility.

Super Pro winners will earn $1,000 with Pro champs earning $500 and Street winners $200.

Since the Junior Dragster divisions are strictly for young amateurs, no prize money is involved. Instead, winners and runners-up earn a trophy with the winner also earning free admission into the following week’s event.

Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Sunday with time trials to start at 10 a.m. and racing elimination rounds to begin at 1 p.m.

Spectator and crew passes are $10 on Sunday. Kids 11 and under get in free.
