It’s a must-watch football weekend

Make sure you’re stocked up on the beverage of your choice, and have your television tuned up and ready to go. This is a major weekend of football for Ohio, and it’s not just the Buckeyes in the Big 10 championship.

Before Ohio State takes on Wisconsin Saturday night, there’s a big game Buckeye fans will be glued to. Ohio native — and former Ohio State quarterback — Joe Burrow leads LSU against Georgia in the SEC title game. Burrow was a star at Athens High School, where he won Ohio’s Mr. Football award.

Oh, and LSU happens to be No. 2 in the College Football Playoff rankings, the biggest challenger to the Buckeyes’ No. 1 ranking. Georgia is no slouch either, ranked No. 4. The massive LSU-Georgia game starts at 4 p.m. on CBS, WHIO Channel 7 in the Miami Valley.

And that’s perfect, because right after that game ends, top-ranked Ohio State plays No. 8 Wisconsin in the Big 10 title game. It’s a rematch,. Ohio State won their first meeting 38-7. You can read all about the matchup, the predictions, and what it means for the Buckeyes’ playoff chances. That game is on Fox at 8 p.m.

But that’s not the only Ohio team battling for a conference championship. Cincinnati plays Memphis in the AAC championship Saturday. It’s a huge game for the No. 20 Bearcats, who lost 34-24 to No. 17 Memphis last week. The conference title and a possible trip to the Cotton Bowl are on the line. That game kicks off at 3:30 Saturday on ABC.

But wait, there’s more! Miami University is playing in the MAC championship against Central Michigan. It’s the first time in a decade the Redhawks have made the MAC title game. That showdown starts at noon on ESPN2.

So, if you’re counting, that’s noon Saturday until about midnight with great football for fans in Ohio.

But then there’s Sunday. The Battle of Ohio. Browns vs. Bengals.

Throw out the records (both teams would actually like you to do that), this is a mean rivalry. While the Bengals got their first win last week, their mission now is to keep their rivals out of the playoffs. The 5-7 Browns are still clinging to playoff hopes, and it’s a must-win game for them. Game time is 1 p.m. Sunday on CBS, WHIO Channel 7. WZLR radio (95.3, 101.1) has the Browns’ announcers, while WLW, WEBN and WTUE have the Bengals’ announcers.

And if you haven’t gotten enough football (do we ever get enough?), The Battle of Ohio is followed on CBS by the biggest game in the NFL: the 10-2 New England Patriots and the 8-4 Kansas City Chiefs.

That’s a lot of football, and, if you’re like us, it will come after watching Ohio’s high school championships (hello, Anna, Trotwood and Marion Local on Friday.

So stock up on food and drink, get your comfy cushions for your couch, and make sure your remote control’s batteries are fully charged. It’s going to be a great football weekend.
