March Sadness: NCAA men’s, women’s basketball tournaments canceled

There will be no March Madness in 2020. The NCAA cancelled the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments Thursday afternoon, ending the season for the Atlantic 10 champions from the University of Dayton.

The Dayton Flyers women’s basketball team won the regular-season and tournament championships.

The Dayton men’s team won the regular-season title with a historic season, finishing 29-2 and 18-0 in the conference and winning its last 20 games. It did not get to play a postseason game as the A-10 tournament was also cancelled Thursday.

“Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships,” the NCAA announced.  This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.”
