NFL Draft: Bengals select Fairfield grad Jackson Carman in Round 2

The Cincinnati Bengals added two fourth-round picks by trading down with the New England Patriots in the second round – and they still got their offensive line help in the form of a local product.

After moving down to No. 46, the Bengals took Fairfield High School graduate Jackson Carman, a left tackle at Clemson, with the 13th pick of the second round to kick off their Day 2 of the NFL Draft on Friday.

New England traded up to the Bengals’ spot at No. 38 (sixth pick of the second round) to take Alabama defensive lineman Christian Barmore, and the Bengals moved down to No. 46 while picking up the 122nd and 139th picks.

Carman was a second-team All-ACC pick as a junior in 2020 after starting 12 games at left tackle. As a true freshman in 2018, he played in 13 games as a backup left tackle for the national champions after enrolling a semester early to settle in. He took over as a starter for all 15 games of his sophomore campaign, and he garnered third-team All-ACC honors for his play.

This was the fourth time in the last five years the Bengals have traded down in the second round. In the previous three times, they still got players they wanted: Joe Mixon in 2017, Jessie Bates in 2018 and Drew Sample in 2019.
