He was chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles with the No. 2 pick in 1938 and played for the Detroit Lions for two seasons.
McDonald also played basketball at Ohio State and was a captain in both sports. He was inducted into the Varsity ‘O’ Hall of Fame in 1986.
2. Only two Ohio State quarterbacks have been drafted in the first round.
Don Scott was the first in 1941. He was taken ninth overall by the Chicago Bears but never played in the NFL. He joined the military instead and was killed in a training exercise. That led to the OSU airport being named after him.

Art Schlichter was the second in 1982. He was taken fourth overall by the Indianapolis Colts, but a gambling problem derailed his career and life. Schlichter is currently in federal prison serving time for running a bogus sports ticket selling operation and violating probation from an earlier conviction.
3. Seven Ohio State defensive ends have gone in the first round.
Joey Bosa is the most recent defensive end to be taken in the first round. He was the No. 3 overall pick by the Chargers in 2016.
The first in the common era (since 1967) is Eric Kumerow, Bosa’s uncle, who went to the Dolphins at No. 16 in 1988.
Prior to that, the Browns used the No. 8 overall pick in 1960 on Jim Houston, an All-American two-way end for the Buckeyes who ended up playing defense in the NFL.

Half of them have come in the past 15 drafts (starting with Chris Gamble) and 13 since Shawn Springs in 1997.
Ohio State has had 14 running backs or halfbacks drafted in the first round, 13 offensive tackles and 10 linebackers.
