NFL Draft: Washington Redskins draft Chase Young with No. 2 pick

It’s the second year in a row an Ohio State defensive end has been taken with the second pick. The San Francisco 49ers drafted Nick Bosa at that spot last season.

It’s also the second year in a row the Redskins have drafted a Buckeye in the first round. They picked quarterback Dwayne Haskins at No. 15 in 2019. Young joins a roster that also includes former Ohio State wide receiver Terry McLaurin, a third-round pick last year, and former tight end Marcus Baugh, who signed in March.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Young, of Hyattsville, Md., and Dematha Catholic High School, became the ninth defensive player to make the list of Heisman Trophy finalists last season. He won the Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player and the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation’s top defensive end. He led the Buckeyes with 16½ sacks in his junior season and finished his career with 30½ in three seasons.

Young is the ninth defensive lineman coached by Larry Johnson to be drafted in the first round and the third to be a top-three pick. Joey Bosa was the third overall section in 2016.
