NHRA Top Fuel field includes area hopefuls

The world’s top drag racers roar into Norwalk this weekend for the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals. Three of those teams in the Top Fuel division of the NHRA Mellow Yellow Series hail from the Miami Valley.

Dayton’s Pat Dakin is among the 19 entries in the Top Fuel division and one that also includes his brother Mike Dakin, owner of Warrior Racing based in Tipp City. Veteran driver Cory McClenathan will be behind the wheel for Mike Dakin’s dragster.

Both teams are running an abbreviated NHRA schedule for 2015. This is Pat’s sixth NHRA event and the third for Warrior Racing.

Dote Racing, based in Monroe, fields the Gumout dragster for Indiana driver Leah Pritchett. Dote Racing enters Norwalk ranked 13th in the points chase. The top 10 continue on to the Countdown to the Championship. Counting Norwalk there are seven races remaining to qualify. Pritchett trails 10th place by 78 points.

The event also hosts the Lucas Oil Series as an undercard. A handful of area entries include:

Top Fuel Alcohol: Tony Bogolo, Hamilton.

Competition Eliminator: Terry Smith, Middletown; Rick Brown, Lebanon.

Super Stock: David Dupps, Germantown; David Dupps Jr., Germantown.

Stock Eliminator: Julie Biermann, Xenia.

Super Comp: Dean McIlvain, New Carlisle.

Super Gas: Joe Fisher, Clayton; Tim Gillespie, Xenia; Rob Kropfeld, Hamilton; Charles Flanagan Jr., Maria Stein.

Top Sportsman: Jeff Sexton, Fairborn.

Top Dragster: Brian Sexton, Brookville; Tom Fisher, Englewood; Joe Fisher, Clayton.

In addition to Norwalk, area tracks are also in action this holiday weekend:

Shadybowl Speedway: Two days of action start Saturday with late models, modifieds, street stocks, tuners, compacts and dwarfs. Features will run for tuners, compacts and dwarfs only with other divisions qualifying for Sunday's action. Gates open at 4 p.m.

The 72-lap Bobby Korn Memorial for late models runs Sunday. The modifieds run a 50-lap feature in the Roger Winget Classic. Stocks, compacts, tuners and dwarfs also run features.

Gates open at 1 p.m.

Waynesfield Raceway Park: The Bob Reynolds Memorial featuring the NRA Sprint Invaders runs Saturday. The UMP modifieds, and the FAST 305 winged sprints are also in action. Gates open at 3:30 p.m.

Edgewater Sports Park: The drag strip runs the super pro, pro, pro sportsman, jr. dragster and motorcycle divisions on Saturday, in addition to the United Manuel Transmission Racers series. Gates open at 2 p.m.
