Northwestern coach aspires to have program like Dayton Flyers

Northwestern Wildcats coach Chris Collins didn’t notice how much his fans were outnumbered by Dayton Flyers fans Saturday night at the United Center.

Collins considered it a home game for his team even though it was only the second time Northwestern has played at the arena. UD may have had many more fans in the stands, but they had few reasons to get loud until late in the second half. Northwestern built a 24-point lead and then held on for a 67-64 victory in the first game of the Chicago Legends doubleheader.

“I couldn’t even tell you about the fans,” Collins said. “I was locked into the game. I know Dayton has a great fan base. They probably have a lot of people here. I’ve grown up watching them play. And they sell out their building every night. They have a great program and a great fan base, and that’s something we aspire to have. You have to win, though. That’s my answer to everything. What are you going to do? You’ve got to just keep winning and everything else will take care of itself.”

Rotation change: Archie Miller played junior guard Darrell Davis more in the second half than senior guard Kyle Davis.

Kyle Davis played 12 minutes in the first half and nine in the second, scoring two points on 1-of-8 shooting. Darrell Davis played 14 of his 25 minutes in the second half. He had two points and missed all three of his field-goal attempts.

“I think Darrell was playing excellent defense; he has been the last few games,” Miller said. “Hopefully at some point in time he can regain his shooting touch, but I felt like Darrell gave us a better chance in the second half just because of the runs that we were on when he was in there. So we just went with him.”

Former Flyer: Bobby Wehrli, the walk-on turned scholarship player who was a senior last season, was at the game. He's from nearby Naperville. Wehrli, who's working on his master's degree at UD, said he never played at the United Center in high school.

Next week: Dayton plays its last two non-conference games in the week before Christmas.

The Flyers host Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Commodores (5-5) played Chattanooga on Saturday night. Vanderbilt lost its previous game on Dec. 8, 71-48 to Middle Tennessee State.

Then on Friday, Dayton hosts Virginia Military Institute at 7 p.m. VMI (2-7) picked up its first win over a Division I team in its last game Tuesday, beating Charleston Southern 88-83.
