Obi Toppin reaches career milestone for Dayton Flyers

Obi Toppin joined the 1,000-point club on Saturday, becoming the 50th player in Dayton Flyers history to reach that milestone. He scored 28 points in an 80-70 victory against Duquesne at UD Arena. He now has 1,007 points and ranks 49th in the record book.

Dayton honored Toppin after the game. Coach Anthony Grant presented him the game ball, and the entire team posed for a photo with Toppin, who also set the single-season record for dunks in a game. He dunked six times and has 89 this season. He set the old record of 83 last season.

Toppin, a redshirt sophomore forward, is the first Dayton player since Jordan Sibert to score 1,000 points in two seasons. Sibert ranks 45th with 1,030 points.

Toppin is the eighth fastest player to 1,000 points in UD history, reaching the milestone in his 60th game. Hank Finkel reached 1,000 in 41 games and was followed by Donald Smith (46), Don May (49), Bill Uhl Sr. (53), Johnny Davis (56), Dave Colbert (57) and Don Meineke (57).

Earlier this season, Toppin's teammate Jalen Crutcher surpassed 1,000 points in a road game at Duquesne.

Roosevelt Chapman, who played for Dayton from 1980-84, remains the program’s all-time leading scorer with 2,233 points. He’s also the only player in school history with more than 2,000 points.
