Ohio State’s Chase Young wins national defense award

RECAP: How Ohio State rallied to beat Penn State

The sophomore was named the chuck Bednarik National Defensive Player of the Week by the Maxwell Football Club following a six-tackle, two-sack game against the Nittany Lions.

Young’s third tackle for loss of the night essentially ended the game as he brought down Penn State running back Miles Sanders in the backfield on a fourth-and-5 play with 1:16 left in the fourth quarter.

Young also batted down two passes in the game.

Previously this week he was named co-player of the week for defense by the Big Ten along with Michigan defensive end Chase Winovich.

These are the first such awards for Young, a highly-regarded recruit from Maryland’s Dematha Catholic High School who was widely expected to step up his game after Nick Bosa went down with an abdominal injury.

Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins — also a sophomore from Maryland — was named the Big Ten offensive player of the week after threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns against the Nittany Lions.

He has already won that award three times in the first five weeks of the season.

Haskins overcame a rough first half to throw for 212 yards in the second. He engineered a 96-yard touchdown drive to cap Ohio State’s comeback in front of a record crowd at Beaver Stadium.
