The backup quarterback has played a major role the last two seasons for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Two years ago in the national championship season, even the third-string quarterback, a guy named Cardale Jones, found a role.

Ohio State will enter the 2016 season with one of the most recognizable names in college football as the starting quarterback, J.T. Barrett. The backup will be Joe Burrow, a redshirt freshman from Athens, Ohio. He completed 14 of 23 passes for 196 yards and threw three touchdown passes Saturday for the Gray team in a 28-17 victory over the Scarlet team in the spring game at Ohio Stadium.

“I know I can play here now,” Burrow said.

Burrow was sacked twice on the Gray’s first possession. In the second quarter, he threw two touchdown passes to Torrance Gibson. He threw his third touchdown pass in the third quarter to Terry McLaurin.

“I was a lot more comfortable in the second quarter,” Burrow said. “Our receivers got going a little bit. Antonio Williams started running the ball pretty hard, and our offense started clicking. I thought I took a step forward. There’s still a long way to go. I’m going to work really hard to be the backup at Ohio State.”

Halftime race: Hybrid back Dontre Wilson beat five Ohio State students in the fastest-student race at halftime. Wilson was limited in spring practices because of a nagging foot injury.

Longest pass: Jones, who hopes to hear his name called in the NFL draft April 28-30, beat Barrett by two yards in the longest-throw competition at halftime.

“Cardale’s something else,” Barrett said. “I didn’t put everything into that throw. It was about 75 percent of me. Cardale just launched it.”

Team captains: Linebacker Chris Worley and defensive end Sam Hubbard served as captains for the Gray team. Linebacker Craig Fada and tight end Marcus Baugh were the Scarlet captains.

Secret party: Wayne graduate and former Buckeye Braxton Miller attended a "secret tailgate" party sponsored by Uber. From 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, fans could request the "Braxton" option in the Uber app on their phones, and select fans were taken to a secret venue near campus to tailgate with Miller.

Looking ahead: Ohio State opens the 2016 season on Sept. 3 against Bowling Green at Ohio Stadium. It hosts Tulsa the following week and then goes on the road to play Oklahoma on Sept. 17.

Ohio State doesn’t play Sept. 24 and then plays the first of nine Big Ten games in nine weeks on Oct. 1 at home against Rutgers.
