High school hoop: OHSAA adds running clock to tourney blowouts

High school basketball will follow football’s lead and have a running clock for boys and girls basketball this coming season.

That was one of the highlights the Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors agreed upon during its monthly October meeting in Columbus on Thursday.

The new basketball rule affects only boys and girls varsity postseason tournament games, beginning at the sectional level and only in the second half. A running clock will be used when there is a 35-point differential. After that, normal clock usage will be implemented when the margin is less than 30 points.

The OHSAA instituted a second-half running clock rule for all football games in the 2014 season. The running clock is used to curb lopsided outcomes.

Friday, Oct. 27, is the first day of girls basketball practice. That season begins on Friday, Nov. 24.

Boys basketball preseason practice begins on Friday, Nov., 3. The boys season starts on Thursday, Nov. 30.
