There will be a new way to determine if a correct call was made in the Ohio high school football state championships: video replay.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has approved instant replay for the seven season-ending divisional state championships at Canton this coming season. The OHSAA has not addressed the unprecedented move, but did include it in a recent posting of its football tournament regulations.

According to Beau Rugg, the OHSAA Senior Director of Officiating and Sport Management, fumbles, interceptions and scoring plays are all reviewable.

The National Federation of State High School Associations, which the OHSAA is a member, earlier this year agreed to the use of video replay for football playoff games. The OHSAA approved the new rule during its June Board of Directors meeting.

The state football championships will be held Dec. 5-7 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton. All the state championships in addition to some regular-season and playoff games are televised by Spectrum Cable.

Video replay already is in use for Ohio’s girls and boys state basketball championships. That only pertains to the final seconds of regulation or overtime. That has not been required as yet.

The OHSAA likely will address football video replay prior to the season start. Most Week 1 games are Friday, Aug. 30. Preseason football began last week.
