Former Dayton Flyers guard Rodney Chatman will play for the Red Scare in The Basketball Tournament this summer, the UD alumni team announced Friday.

Chatman played two seasons at Chattanooga, two seasons at Dayton and then one season at Vanderbilt in a college career that stretched from 2016 to 2022. He’s now playing his first season of professional basketball in Denmark for Team FOG Naestved and has averaged 20.3 points and 4.4 assists in 32 games.

Chatman sat out the 2018-19 season as a transfer at Dayton and then was one of three players, along with Obi Toppin and Ryan Mikesell, to start all 31 games for Dayton in the 29-2 season of 2019-20. He averaged 7.7 points and 3.2 assists that season and led the team with 39 steals.

In the 2020-21 season, Chatman averaged 7.9 points and 3.8 assists in 16 games. He started the first six games but suffered a torn ligament in his right hand during the Atlantic 10 Conference opener against La Salle on Dec. 30 and missed the next 11 games. He played in the next six games but did not play in a first-round loss to Memphis in the NIT. He graduated from UD in the spring of 2021 with a degree in education.

Chatman entered the transfer portal in March and finished career at Vanderbilt. He was limited to 16 games in an injury-plagued season and averaged 7.8 points and 1.6 assists. He played against Dayton in the second round of the NIT that season and scored nine points in a 70-68 victory for Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.

With the addition of Chatman, who will make his TBT debut, the Red Scare has four confirmed players for the 2023 TBT. Former Flyers Darrell Davis, Ryan Mikesell and Josh Cunningham will return to the team after playing together last season. More players will be announced in the coming weeks.

The TBT will hold an eight-team regional at UD Arena from July 25-30.
