Red Scare’s leading scorer in 2022 returning to roster for TBT this summer

Scoochie Smith will make his second appearance in tournament

The Red Scare announced Wednesday former Dayton Flyers guard Scoochie Smith will play for them in The Basketball Tournament for the second straight year.

Smith joins a roster that includes former UD teammates Darrell Davis, Ryan Mikesell, Josh Cunningham and Trey Landers and one other former Flyer who arrived at UD a year after Smith graduated, Rodney Chatman. More roster additions will be announced in the weeks ahead.

Smith, in his first TBT appearance, led the Red Scare in scoring (14.6) and assists (4.8) last year. The tournament is a $1 million winner-takes-all event featuring teams of former college stars and many current pros from overseas.

The Red Scare won four games to reach the TBT semifinals at UD Arena last season. The TBT will hold an eight-team regional at UD Arena this year from July 25-30. The Red Scare could play as many as three games on its old home court.

Smith, who ranks 28th in Dayton history with 1,289 points, is playing this season for Start Lublin in Poland. He’s averaging 13.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 27 games. Smith played the last two seasons with Mega Basket in Serbia. He has also played in Australia, Greece and the NBA G League.
