Cincinnati Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett will begin a rehab assignment with the Single-A Daytona Tortugas on Monday.

The Tortugas play the Florida Fire at 7:05 p.m. in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Gennett has been on the injured list all season with a strained right groin. He suffered the injury in March in spring training while fielding a ground ball. At the time, the Reds announced he would miss eight to 12 weeks.

Without Gennett, who hit 50 home runs and .303 the last two seasons as the starting second baseman, the Reds have used Jose Peraza and Derek Dietrich at second base. Kyle Farmer has also made nine starts at second.

Dietrich earned more playing time after hitting 12 home runs in May but is hitting .135 in June with no home runs. Overall he’s hitting .231 and has started 32 games at second, while also seeing time at first base and in the outfield.

Peraza’s hitting .211. He has started 28 games at second and also seen time at shortstop and in the outfield.

The Reds (30-38) start a three-game series against the Houston Astros (48-24) at 7:10 p.m. Monday at Great American Ball Park.
