CINCINNATI — The last time the Cincinnati Reds won 11 games in a row, manager David Bell’s grandfather, Gus Bell, was the starting second center fielder.

With a 5-3 victory Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies at Great American Ball Park giving the 2023 Reds their 11th straight victory, Bell had reason to talk about his grandpa and extra reason to celebrate a rare feat.

In his postgame press conference, Bell was asked about the team becoming the first since 1957 to win 11 straight games.

“It’s impressive,” Bell said. “It’s kind a reminder this kind of streak isn’t easy. Every single day it’s a huge challenge. It takes everything we have to be able to string it together like that. We really appreciate the opportunity to be able to do this. Mentioning a team like (the 1957 team) is obviously very meaningful to me. I’ve heard so much about those teams, so to even be mentioned and compared to them in a small way, it’s pretty neat.”

The Reds (40-35) extended their lead in the National League Central Division to one game over the Milwaukee Brewers (38-35), who played later Wednesday afternoon.

This was the Reds’ 26th comeback victory. They fell behind 3-0, tied the game with three runs in the fifth and took the lead on a two-run home run by Jake Fraley in the eighth.

The Reds will try to match the 1957 team and 1939 teams, which both won 12 games in a row, when they open a series Friday at home against the Atlanta Braves.

No Reds team in the modern era has won more than 12 games in a row. The Reds won 14 games in a row in 1899 and 13 in a row in 1890.

The Reds swept their third straight series in part because starter Andrew Abbott overcame three early home runs to strike out 10 in six innings. Lucas Sims, Ian Gibaut and Buck Farmer kept the Rockies off the board in the final three innings.
