» PHOTOS: A look back at Phillips' career
Phillips will join a team with baseball’s best record. Through Sunday, Boston was 94-54 with a 7½-game lead in the American League East Division.
The Red Sox signed Phillips to a minor-league contract on June 27. He last played in the big leagues in 2017, appearing in 120 games for the Atlanta Braves and 24 games for the Los Angeles Angels. The Reds traded Phillips to the Braves in 2017 for Carlos Portuondo and Andrew McKirahan.
» ASK HAL: Who will be in Reds rotation in 2019?
Phillips, 38, is a career. 275 hitter with 16 years of experience in the big leagues. He hit 191 home runs in 11 seasons (2006-16) with the Reds. He won four Gold Glove awards.
Brandon Phillips and Rafael Devers will be added to the roster tomorrow. Everyone can stop freaking out about Phillips not being called up initially. Cora said he payed well, good clubhouse presence. He knows he won’t get much playing time with so many other INF options
