The Reds on Saturday called up top prospect Noelvi Marte.

Marte hit .279 this season combined at Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville. The 21-year-old has also hit 11 home runs and stolen 18 bases.

Primarily a shortstop coming up, Marte has played almost exclusively at third base at Louisville. Reds manager David Bell told reporters Saturday afternoon Marte will play third base every day. He was not in the lineup for Saturday night’s game vs. the Blue Jays.

Marte is the latest rookie added to the Reds roster, joining infielders Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain, Spencer Steer and Christian Encarnacion-Strand and pitchers Andrew Abbott and Brandon Williamson.

Marte spent part of the 2022 season with the Dayton Dragons after being traded to the Reds from Seattle last summer as part of the Luis Castillo trade at the deadline.

To make room for Marte, the Reds place infielder Kevin Newman on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain.

The Reds entered play Saturday tied with the Miami Marlins for the third wild card in the National League. The Reds were two games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central standings to start the day.
