Major League Baseball announces season will start in one month

“See you soon,” Cincinnati Reds catcher Tucker Barnhart wrote on Twitter.

Reds Chief Executive Officer Bob Castellini released a statement, saying, “Amidst a unique and challenging year for the world and our sport, we look forward to getting the 2020 MLB season underway and the return of Reds baseball to Great American Ball Park. We are extremely grateful to our fans for their support, and are excited for this competitive team to take the field.”

It will be a 60-game regular season with teams playing opponents within their division and opponents in the other geographic division to mitigate travel. The Cincinnati Reds, for example, will play fellow National League Central Division teams and also teams from the American League Central.

The vast majority of big-league teams will conduct training camps in their home cities, Major League Baseball announced, and players will report for training by July 1.

“Major League Baseball is thrilled to announce that the 2020 season is on the horizon,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. We have provided the Players Association with a schedule to play 60 games and are excited to provide our great fans with Baseball again soon.”

The news follows Major League Baseball's announcement on Monday that the owners had voted to proceed with the 2020 season. They gave the players until 5 p.m. Tuesday to agree to report to training camp in one week and to agree to health and safety protocols.
