Rhode Island coach Hurley roots for Cincinnati Bengals

Hurley’s team is preseason favorite in A-10

Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley started his Atlantic 10 media round-table interview Tuesday by talking about the Cincinnati Bengals — his favorite team, believe it or not.

Hurley grew up in New Jersey but became a Bengals fan when he was 9 when he watched the Freezer Bowl in 1982 on TV.

“The Chargers came out of the tunnel in all these parkas and long sleeves,” Hurley said, “and Dan Fouts has the big wool hat and gloves. Then the (Bengals) offensive line runs out in pads only — no gloves, no jackets. They just came out strong. And I liked the Bengal tiger stripes as a little kid.”

Hurley’s brother Bobby, now the coach at Arizona State, and his dad Bob, a famed coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, root for the Dallas Cowboys.

“Anytime I can go against my brother and my father in sports teams, I do,” Dan said.

Hurley won his first A-10 championship in the conference tournament last March. His team was voted the preseason favorite in a poll released during Media Day at the Capital One Center. The Rams received 27 of 28 first-place votes.

“We had a great end to the season last year,” Hurley said. “We have a tremendous amount of momentum from March. We return a tremendous group of guards in particular that are experienced. Anytime you have that type of mature, talented guard depth, you’re going to have high expectations. It’s kind of what we expected just based on everything we return.”

New home: Kevin Kuwik, an assistant coach on Archie Miller's staff at Dayton the last six seasons, is now the director of basketball operations at Davidson. Coach Bob McKillop said Kuwik fits his program perfectly.

“It’s like getting a top-50 recruit,” McKillop said.

Miller update: Dayton coach Anthony Grant provided an update on suspended junior forward Sam Miller. Asked if he knows yet whether Miller plans to return to UD in the second semester, he said, "We'll cross that bridge when we get to it."

Grant said Miller is at home in D.C. this fall, and they talk periodically. Miller was suspended from school in August following an incident in the Greene County Jail, and his scholarship was revoked for the entire academic year.

“It seems like he’s in a good place,” Grant said. “He’s got a lot going on in terms of keeping himself busy and active. So far everything is lining up where this could be a good outcome for him.”

All-conference: No Dayton players were named to the preseason teams. Here's a glance at the players honored.

First team: Davidson’s Peyton Aldridge; Rhode Island’s E.C. Matthews; St. Bonaventure’s Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley; and Virginia Commonwealth’s Justin Tillman.
