Russia’s Dion Puthoff to be honored in St. Louis with Musial Award

Russia High School baseball player Dion Puthoff will receive a Musial Award on Nov. 18 in St. Louis.

Puthoff will be honored for his display of sportsmanship in June. He gave the ball hit by Minster’s Jon Niemeyer to drive in the winning run in the state championship game to Niemeyer. Puthoff was the fielder who ended up with the ball as Minster celebrated its victory. He drove the ball to Niemeyer’s house weeks later.

Niemeyer will present Puthoff with the Musial Award. The Musial Awards honor St. Louis Cardinals great Stan Musial and recognize the year’s greatest moments and stories of sportsmanship — along with iconic sports figures who embody class and character.”

West Liberty-Salem track star Meghan Vogel won a Musial Award in 2012.
