Smith to remain as City League AD

Jonas Smith’s tenure as the Upper Arlington High School athletic director ended before it started.

The Dayton Public Schools AD since 2005, Smith was named to the Golden Bears’ position in April, then resigned in mid-June. “Everyone knows I’m a family man and I’m going to do what’s best for my family,” he said on Monday. “The transition at this time would just be too difficult for my family.”

That would include his wife LaDonna and sons Jaren (14) and Jalen (10).

Smith also is the Ohio High School Athletic Association state board of directors president and ethnic-minority representative. He previously was the AD and girls basketball coach at Jefferson.

He expects to remain with the City League. “I’m here and I have no interest in anything else,” he said.

• Beavercreek and West Carrollton have essentially swapped AD’s. Beavercreek’s position opened when Jim Smerz retired. That was filled following Brad Pompos’ resignation as the West Carrollton AD.

The opening at West Carrollton was filled by former Beavercreek middle schools AD Nancy Beers. The Beavercreek resident also was an assistant principal at Yellow Springs this past school year.

Pompos becomes only the seventh AD at Beavercreek, following Bob Workman (deceased), Rex Warner, Bevan Garwood, Denton Brower, Ed Zink and Smerz. Prior to West Carrollton, Pompos was the AD at Dayton Christian.

Pompos said his first duty at Beavercreek was attending a hall of fame meeting, which drew all the former ADs. “There were 44 years of experience there,” Pompos said. “I’m excited to be a member of the strong athletic tradition that’s there. Hopefully, I can help strengthen the tradition for future generations of athletes there.”

• Wayne’s Messiah deWeaver is one of 18 senior quarterbacks from throughout the country who are huddling with former NFL player Trent Dilfer in the Elite 11 training camp at the Nike World Headquarters at Beaverton, Ore., this week. The competition runs through Friday. Portions of the activities will be aired on ESPNU.

“He’s got that silent energy that gets everybody better throughout the day,” Dilfer told MLive Media Group about deWeaver. “This guy is a stone-cold assassin on the football field, has all the talent in the world.”

deWeaver is verbally committed to Michigan State. He played the previous three seasons at Trotwood-Madison. The only other area QB to advance to the Elite 11 camp was Malik Zaire of Alter in 2012. He’s ticketed to be the starting QB at Notre Dame this season.

• Former Chaminade Julienne standout Justin Bibbs was a member of the USA men’s 19U national team that won gold in the FIBA World Championship at Crete, Greece, on Sunday. Bibbs was a late replacement for Kentucky recruit Isaiah Broscoe, who was lost to a concussion during practice last month at Colorado Springs, Colo.

A 6-5 shooting guard, Bibbs saw his playing time reduced as the U.S. team progressed through the rounds. He did not play in the 79-71 OT defeat of Croatia in the title game. Bibbs averaged 11.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists as a freshman at Virginia Tech last season. He played two seasons at Montverde Academy (Fla.) after transferring from CJ.

Dayton head coach Archie Miller was an assistant on the U.S. team. His brother Sean (Arizona) was the head coach.
