Springboro High School announced the hiring of Brian Bales as head boys basketball coach on Friday. He will be introduced at a Meet the Coach event at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school library.

Bales, a 1995 Franklin High School graduate, spent the last 15 seasons as the head coach at his alma mater and resigned from that job on Feb. 28, three days after the end of a 19-5 season. At Springboro, he replaces Brett Kostoff, who resigned for personal reasons on Feb. 3 after two seasons.

Springboro finished 9-15 last season. Its roster includes RJ Greer, who averaged 15.3 points as a freshman and has received scholarship offers from Florida, New Mexico State and others.

Bales had a record of 267-120 at Franklin. His teams won 10 Southwest Buckeye League championships. He was the Associated Press Division II coach of the year in 2012 and 2015, when one of the nation’s top recruits, Luke Kennard, was a senior. Kennard finished his fifth season in the NBA and his second season with the Los Angeles Clippers in April.

Earlier in his career, Bales was the head coach at Miamisburg (2005-07) after two seasons as an assistant. He also coached Miami University Middletown from 2003-05 and had a 54-9 record in two seasons.

Bales will work at Springboro as the district’s coordinator of behavior and intervention services.
