Springfield and Miamisburg are the only two remaining unbeaten high school football teams in the 20-member Greater Western Ohio Conference. Both are 5-0 after Week 5 wins on Friday.

The teams are not scheduled to play in the regular season, but could be paired in the playoffs. Springfield improved to No. 2 in the Division I, Region 3 computer rankings following a 28-0 shutout of visiting Lebanon and Miamisburg bumped up to No. 3 after defeating Troy in a battle of unbeatens, 31-14.

Miamisburg opened with three straight defeats of non-area opponents that have a combined three wins. Those were followed by a surprise 30-13 defeat of nemesis Wayne and backed up with a showdown victory at Troy.

That was the kind of bounce-back Vikings coach Steve Channell was looking for after Miamisburg went 4-6 last season and missed the postseason. Quarterback Tate Vongsy completed just eight passes but was good for 193 yards and a touchdown against the Trojans. He also scored on two short runs.

Miamisburg hosts Fairmont (4-1) in a Week 6 GWOC crossover contest.

Seen & overheard: Bethel QB Jacob Ullmer had a unique way of preventing dehydration during a humidified 52-28 loss at Miami East on Thursday. The senior downed small packets of mustard between second-half series.

“It has potassium and sodium in it, so it helps with the cramps,” explained Bees trainer Kristina Fahrner.

Ullmer had 246 yards rushing and scored all four Bees touchdowns. That tangy treat made a quick converter of Bethel coach Scott Clodfelter.

“We’ll have to get a big bottle of Heinz if it works that well,” he said.
