The Basketball Tournament: Defending champs ousted in quarterfinals at UD Arena

No No. 1 seeds remain heading into Sunday’s semifinals

Two more No. 1 seeds lost in the quarterfinals of The Basketball Tournament at UD Arena on Saturday. The other two didn’t even make it that far.

A No. 3 seed, a No. 5 seed and two No. 6 seeds will play in the semifinals Sunday, each needing to win two games in Dayton to win the $1 million prize.

The championship game takes place at 9 p.m. Tuesday, and there will be a new champion because the defending champion Golden Eagles were one of the No. 1 seeds to lose Saturday.

Here’s a look at the four quarterfinal games. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com.

No. 5 seed Florida TNT 92, No. 2 AfterShocks 63: Dominique Jones, who scored 1,797 points in three seasons at South Florida, led the Florida team to a blowout victory in the first quarterfinal. Kenny Boynton, a 2,033-point scorer for the Florida Gators (2009-13), added 16 points.

Florida TNT shot 61 percent from the field and 50 percent (14 of 28) from 3-point range.

No. 3 Boeheim’s Army 73, No. 1 Golden Eagles 69: The Syracuse alumni team knocked out the defending champions, a Marquette alumni team, in the second quarterfinal.

The Golden Eagles led 64-62 when the Elam Ending began at just under the four-minute mark. Tyrese Rice, a 2,099-point scorer at Boston College (2005-09), hit the game-ending shot. He led the team with 20 points.

Boeheim’s Army will play Florida TNT in the first semifinal at noon Sunday.

No. 6 Team 23 78, No. 1 Sideline Cancer 71: Eric Washington, who averaged 14.0 points in two seasons with the Miami RedHawks, led Team 23 to the upset victory against a team that reached the championship game in 2020.

Team 23 took a two-point lead into the Elam Ending and then scored the first six points. They won the game on a jump shot by Marcus Hall, who scored 1,178 points in his career (2003-08) at Colorado.

No. 6 Blue Collar U, No. 5 The Money Team: Led by Nick Perkins’ 23 points, the Buffalo alumni team advanced to a 2:30 p.m. semifinal against Team 23 on Sunday.

Blue Collar U trailed 81-80 but scored the last four points in the Elam Ending. Baskets by Blake Hamilton, who averaged 15.2 points in two seasons (2015-17) at Buffalo, and Perkins, a 1,774 point scorer (2015-19) at Buffalo, clinched the victory.
