The Basketball Tournament: Red Scare add Ohio State guard to roster

Dayton alumni team starts play Saturday in Columbus

The Dayton Flyers alumni team that will start play in The Basketball Tournament next weekend added a second Ohio State alum to the roster on Sunday.

CJ Walker, a 6-foot-1 guard who averaged 9.1 points the last two seasons for the Buckeyes, joins a Red Scare roster that includes eight former Flyers and one other former Buckeye: 6-11 forward Trevor Thompson.

Walker replaces former Flyers guard Kyle Davis, who announced July 11 he would not be able to participate because of personal reasons.

In addition to Walker and Thompson, the Red Scare roster includes: Brandon Spearman; Devin Oliver; Jordan Sibert; Devon Scott; Kendall Pollard; Darrell Davis; Ryan Mikesell; and Trey Landers. The group will hold its first practice on Monday in Dayton.

Oliver, Davis, Mikesell and Landers played for the team last season, while Oliver, Davis and Pollard were on the first Red Scare team in 2019. Joey Gruden will coach the team for the third straight year and will be rejoined on the bench by fellow former Dayton walk-on Jeremiah Bonsu, who helped organize and coach the first team with Gruden in 2019.

The Columbus Regional of the TBT starts Friday. The Red Scare, which is seeded second in the region, plays its first game at 3 p.m. Saturday at Ohio State’s Covelli Center. The opponent is No. 15 seed BC Vahakni City. The game will be televised on ESPN3.

If the Red Scare wins Saturday, it will play at 2 p.m. Sunday against No. 7 seed Wolf Blood (N.C. State alums) or No. 10 seed Category 5 (Miami Hurricanes alums). That game will be televised on ESPN.

If the Red Scare wins its first two games, it will again at 7 p.m. Tuesday. That game will be on ESPN. The possible third-round opponents are: No. 3 seed Zip ‘Em Up (Xavier alums); No. 4 Ohio 1804 (Ohio Bobcats alums); No. 6 Blue Collar U (Buffalo Bulls alums); and No. 11 The Nerd Team (Ivy League alums).

The Red Scare will have to win three games to advance to the final three rounds, which will be held at UD Arena from July 31-Aug. 3.
