Ohio State not only upset Michigan but set numerous records Saturday in one of the most improbable games in a series that started in 1897.

Here are five things to know about the 10th-ranked Buckeyes' 62-39 win over the No. 4 Wolverines.

1. The Buckeyes blew by their record for points in a game against Michigan.

The previous high mark was 50, set first in 1961 and again seven years later.

Michigan had never allowed that many points in regulation before (to anyone), and the previous record had stood for a mere 127 years.

Cornell hung 58 on the Wolverines in 1891. (The Michigan record for points allowed came in a 67-65 triple-overtime win over Illinois in 2010.)

“I don’t know about 62, but I knew we were going to come out and put on a show,” Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins said of taking on a team leading the nation in yards allowed per game and fourth in points allowed per game. “I’m proud of how we played today. It started up front with the O-line, and the playmakers made plays. That’s what mattered.”

2. Ohio State won The Game for the seventh straight season.

The Buckeyes have won 16 of the last 18 games against Michigan to draw the series to 58-51-6. That is the closest it has been since a 6-0 Wolverines win in 1906 gave them a 7-0-1 advantage in the series.

“I’ve been saying that really for seven years,” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said. “How do you tackle a rivalry? You show the most incredible amount of respect you can for that rivalry. And how do you do that? You work your you-know-what off as hard as you can. It’s not a one-week thing; it’s a 365 that we work on that.”

The win matches Ohio State’s record for consecutive wins in the series. The Buckeyes also won seven in a row from 2004-10.

Michigan is still looking for its first win at Ohio Stadium since 2000.

3. Haskins shattered more records.

Ohio State’s sophomore quarterback completed 19 of 30 passes for 318 yards and five touchdown passes.

“It’s a crazy win.” he said. “We seen a lot of man coverage (on film), lot of one high (safety), so we knew that we could get a lot of one-on-one match-ups and crossing routes on them. And made some plays when it mattered the most. And it was a great win today.”

He finished the regular season with 41 touchdown passes, two more than Drew Brees’ single-season Big Ten record set in 1998 for Purdue.

Haskins also broke the conference record for passing yards in a season, finishing the game with 4,003 (18 more than Curtis Painter’s total in 2006 for Purdue).

4. Tyree Kinnel led Michigan in tackles.

A senior from Wayne High School, Kinnel made eight tackles, including one for loss.

“You’ve got to give them credit,” he told reporters after the game. “They had a great game plan and they played extremely well.”

“We made adjustments at halftime and addressed the issues we had in the first half and they came out and beat us with something else, so credit to them and their coaches. They had a great game plan and they completely beat us today.”

The safety also finished his career 0-4 against Ohio State.

“I’m just blessed to be in this type of rivalry,” he said. “Growing up, watching it as a little kid, it’s the best part is actually living my dream and playing in it, but I wish I could have got a couple wins in it. That’s the toughest part — I’m going to have to sleep on that the rest of my life, I was not able to win in this game.”

Eight Michigan classes have failed to get a win in four tries against the Buckeyes, the first being the group that entered school in 2004.

That group was also part of the last upset, an Ohio State 37-21 win, in the series before Saturday.

5. The Big Ten championship game is next.

Ohio State will play Northwestern next Saturday night for the Big Ten championship in Indianapolis.

The Wildcats won the West division despite starting the year 1-3, including a 20-17 loss to Michigan.

“We understand that elite warriors, which I consider our players, they get a mission assignment and a directive and if they accomplish it, they celebrate,” Meyer said. “They celebrate the right way with their families. Do the right things. And then they come back tomorrow and they accept their next mission assignment directive. And that’s a big one. That’s in Indianapolis.”
