Three area players first team All-Ohio girls basketball

Destiny Bohanon of Wayne, Franklin’s Layne Ferrell and Mikala Morris of Kenton Ridge all were named first team All-Ohio girls high school basketball by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association on Wednesday.

Bohanon was named to the Division I team and Ferrell and Morris to D-II. All are seniors.

A 5-foot-9 guard, Bohanon averaged a team-high 15.1 points for Wayne (17-5), which placed second in the Greater Western Ohio Conference National East Division to Centerville and advanced to a district final. She also averaged 3.9 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 2.9 steals.

Bohanon signed with the University of Dayton.

On the D-I second team was senior Mya Jackson of Wilmington (25.0 points). On the D-I third team was Corinne Thomas of Tecumseh (22.0). Jackson signed with Seton Hall and Thomas with West Liberty (W.Va.).

Ferrell, a 6-1 center, was first-team D-II. The Southwestern Buckeye League player of the year, she led the SWBL in scoring (20.4), was second in rebounds (9.8) and third in blocks (2.0). Franklin (22-5 overall, 12-1) won an outright SWBL Southwestern Division title and lost to Carroll in a D-II regional final.

Ferrell signed with Akron.

A four-year starter at Kenton Ridge and a 6-2 center, Morris was a dominating factor in the Central Buckeye Conference and was first team D-II. She averaged a CBC-best 27.0 points, 20.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks. She also surpassed 2,000 career points and her 1,700-plus career rebounds is an all-time Ohio girls record.

Kenton Ridge was 19-3 in the regular season (21-4 overall) and was runner-up to Tecumseh in the CBC Kenton Trail Division. Morris was second team All-Ohio as a junior. She signed with Quinnipiac (Conn.).

Carroll senior Elisabeth Bush was second-team D-II.

Kierstand Bell, a senior from Canton McKinley was averaged 28.8 points, was the D-I player of the year. Toledo Rogers senior Zia Cooke (22.5 points) was the D-II player of the year.

The D-I coach of the year was Dave Zvara of Avon Lake and Kevin Cornell of New Philadelphia the D-II coach of the year.

The Division III and IV teams were announced on Tuesday. Teams are chosen at the district level by media reps throughout the state based on coaches’ nominations. Ohio’s Ms. Basketball will be announced on Thursday.

The OPSWA will announce the boys basketball All-Ohio teams next week.
