'Transformational gift' to fund soccer complex for Dayton Flyers

The University of Dayton will build a new practice facility for its men’s and women’s soccer teams thanks to what is being described as a “transformational gift” by alums Margie and Bill Klesse.

The Margie and Bill Klesse Soccer Complex will be dedicated in April 2017 and be finished in September, UD announced Saturday. No dollar amount was mentioned in the press release, but the donation will allow UD to build an “inviting entrance, separate fields for the men and women, covered benches and seating for protection from the elements and wind shields with signage on the existing fencing to increase privacy and decrease traffic noise. The teams also will be getting new goals, additional storage and a swath of artificial turf between the fields for specialized instruction.”

The complex will be built on the site of the current practice fields next to UD’s Fitz Hall.

Bill Klesse is a two-time Dayton soccer MVP. He graduated in 1968. He was the CEO of the Valero Energy Corporation from 2006-14. Margie is also a 1968 graduate and was a Dayton Flyerette.

“Margie and I are very pleased to be able to help the men’s and women’s soccer programs with improved facilities,” Bill Klesse said in a statement. “We are very supportive of soccer as it is a terrific game and teaches teamwork, discipline and strategy while requiring skills which are obtained by dedication and practice. The improved practice facilities will fit nicely with UD’s overall athletic facilities.”

This will be the latest upgrade to UD’s facilities:

• In 2014, UD opened a $2.1 million strength and conditioning facility.

• In 2015, UD opened a renovated Donoher Center. It was upgraded with $4 million in private donations.

• UD is also analyzing potential upgrades to UD Arena.
