Flyers fall in first round of NCAA tournament for second straight season

The Dayton Flyers suffered their most lopsided loss of the season in the first round of the NCAA tournament, falling 84-65 to Marquette on Friday at the KFC Yum! Center.

Dayton trailed 45-31 at halftime and 69-54 after three quarters. They got no closer than 11 points in the third quarter.

No. 9 seed Dayton finished the season 23-7. It’s the second straight season it has lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. No. 8 seed Marquette (24-9) advanced to face No. 1 seed Louisville in the second round Sunday.

Jenna Burdette led the Flyers with 19 points in her final game. JaVonna Layfield had 11 points and 13 rebounds in her last game. Jayla Scaife had 11 points.

Dayton committed 19 turnovers. Sixteen of them came in the first half.

Because of the turnovers, Marquette took 11 more shots than Dayton. Natisha Hiedeman led the Golden Eagles with 32 points.

HALFTIME RECAP

Dayton got off to a strong start, building an 11-3 in the opening minutes, but it didn’t last, and Marquette took a 45-31 lead into halftime.

Dayton's star: Lauren Cannatelli scored nine points on 2-of-7 shooting. She made 4 of 5 free throws.

Marquette's star: Hiedeman scored 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting. She had the team's first 13 points.

Key stat: Dayton committed 16 turnovers. Marquette had four. Every Dayton starter had at least three.

Dayton shot better than Marquette from the field (43.5 to 37.5) and had a 22-18 rebounding advantage but took 17 fewer shots because of the turnovers.

Big run: With the game tied at 15-15, Marquette went on a 13-0 run.

Rebound record: Layfield had 10 rebounds in the first half and broke the single-season school record held by Ann Meyers.
