UC votes to remove Marge Schott’s name from baseball stadium

The name of the former Cincinnati Reds owner, who died in 2004, also adorned a space in the UC archives library. Both names will be removed immediately after a resolution by the UC Board of Trustees.

"Marge Schott’s record of racism and bigotry stands at stark odds with our University’s core commitment to dignity, equity and inclusion,” President Neville G. Pinto said. “My recommendation to the board to remove her name is grounded in the firm belief that speaking out against exclusion is as essential as speaking up for inclusion. I hope this action serves as an enduring reminder that we cannot remain silent or indifferent when it comes to prejudice, hate or inequity. More than ever, our world needs us to convert our values into real and lasting action.”

UC named the baseball stadium after Schott in 2006 following a $2 million donation to the UC Athletics Varsity Village project by the Marge and Charles Schott Foundation.

A petition drive started by former UC athlete Jordan Ramey kicked off the movement to remove Schott’s name. Other athletes supported Ramey, including former big leaguer Kevin Youkilis.
