In the ninth inning, during a meet on the mound, Reds reliever Amir Garrett started walking toward the Pirates dugout with his arms raised. He dropped his glove and then started to sprint. As he slowed, he started throwing punches. He threw four punches before being surrounded by Pirates.
The Reds raced to Garrett’s defense. Infielders Eugenio Suarez and Joey Votto were the first to reach the pile of Pirates on top of Garrett. The rest of the team followed.
Reds manager David Bell, who was ejected earlier in the game for the eighth time this season, joined the group and went at it with Pirates manager Clint Hurdle. Both were on the ground at one point and engaged in a shouting match when they got up.
Just as it appeared things were quieting down, Reds right fielder Yasiel Puig ran at a group of Pirates and had to be held back.
This was the second time the Reds and Pirates emptied the benches this season. Puig tried to take on the whole team in April. Puig was also ejected in this brawl, and the ejection came minutes after the Reds traded him to the Cleveland Indians in a three-team deal.
Garrett was also ejected. Three Pirates were thrown out of the game: Chris Archer; Kyle Crick; and Francisco Cervelli.
