Tigers earn their highest ranking since national runner-up season

The Wittenberg Tigers climbed two spots in the D3Hoops.com poll Monday, rising from No. 5 to No. 3.

It’s the program’s highest ranking since it was No. 2 in the final poll of the 2005-06 season. It lost to Virginia Wesleyan in the national championship game that season.

Wittenberg (17-0, 10-0) is one of two unbeaten teams remaining in the poll. No. 1 Whitman (17-0) is the other. Washington University (14-2) is the other team ahead of Wittenberg.

Wittenberg was unranked until Jan. 1 when it entered the poll at No. 17. It climbed to No. 10, No. 5 and now No. 3.

The Tigers stayed perfect with an 87-58 victory over Allegheny on Saturday in Meadville, Pa. Wittenberg also beat Ohio Wesleyan 93-72 on Wednesday in Springfield. The Battling Bishops were ranked No. 23 but dropped out of the poll this week.

The Tigers lead the North Coast Athletic Conference by three games with eight games to play.

The Tigers play their next three games at Pam Evans Smith Arena: 7 p.m. Wednesday against DePauw (7-10, 3-7); 3 p.m. Saturday against Denison (10-7, 6-4); and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31 against Kenyon (5-12, 2-8).
